€200 — Two Hundred Euros

The artwork

Front: A window and doorway in the Art Nouveau idiom — slender iron mullions, glazed fanlights and a wrought-metal grille — set against a lightly drawn glasshouse vault in yellow and ochre. The twelve stars of the Union scatter across it, with the flag at upper left, the five abbreviations BCE ECB EZB EKT EKP, the copyright year 2001, and the President's facsimile signature. Denomination in Latin and Greek: EURO / ΕΥΡΩ.

Back: A bridge of riveted steel and stone piers, again in the Art Nouveau manner, spanning open water — an invented structure, as all the euro architecture is, so that no member state could claim it. Behind it the map of Europe, including the overseas territories in inset boxes, ringed by the twelve stars. Large numerals at right, EURO and ΕΥΡΩ repeated.

In circulation

The first euro series entered circulation on 1 January 2002 and this design served until the Europa series 200 arrived on 28 May 2019, with its bolder green numeral and portrait window. First-series 200s are no longer issued but remain legal tender and are exchangeable indefinitely at national central banks.
