The artwork

Front: "Reserve Bank of India — Guaranteed by the Central Government" across the top, with the Hindi equivalent below and the promise to pay ten rupees set in both scripts either side of a large numeral 10. At the right, the Lion Capital of Ashoka from Sarnath, India's state emblem, standing on its abacus of wheel and bull. At the left, a plain oval watermark window and a column of the denomination in the official languages, with the Bank's palm-and-tiger seal beneath.

Back: The design that gives the series its name: two peacocks perched in a flowering tree, one with its tail fanned out in blue-dotted eyes, set within a roundel. Around them a decorative frieze of grazing deer, lotus blossoms and a mahout astride an elephant, in the manner of Indian temple relief. "Ten Rupees" in a scrolled cartouche below, the Hindi legend above, and a second watermark oval at the right.

In circulation

The peacock reverse was introduced on the ten-rupee note in the early 1970s and stayed in issue, with successive Governors' signatures, into the 1990s. This example carries R.N. Malhotra's signature, placing it in the second half of the 1980s. The Mahatma Gandhi series of 1996 displaced it, and the older notes were steadily withdrawn thereafter.
