The artwork

Front: Mahatma Gandhi in three-quarter profile, the familiar 1946 portrait that has fronted Indian notes since 1996, printed in greenish-yellow over a fine guilloche ground. Above, the issuer in Hindi and English with the central government guarantee; at right the promise to pay twenty rupees, the Governor's signature, the Reserve Bank seal and the Lion Capital of Ashoka with Satyameva Jayate. Serial 45U 735524, small at upper left and large below.

Back: A vertical panel carries the denomination in fifteen languages, as on every note of the series. Beside it, the rock-cut Kailasa temple at the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra — the eighth-century monolith hewn downward out of basalt — captioned in Hindi and English. Lower left, the Swachh Bharat spectacles and the slogan 'एक कदम स्वच्छता की ओर'. The year 2024 is printed at the left edge.

In circulation

The twenty was the last denomination redrawn for the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, issued from April 2019 in this smaller greenish-yellow format to replace the long-running orange-red twenty of the older series. Both remain legal tender, though the earlier design is steadily disappearing from tills.
