The artwork
Front: A white rhinoceros fills the right half, head turned three-quarters towards the viewer, the front horn rising the full depth of the note; behind it, at left, a small bushveld vignette of rhino among thorn scrub. Between them sit two sunflower-head rosettes, and at lower right a faceted stone in warm brown. "SUID-AFRIKAANSE RESERWEBANK" above, "SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK" below, with TIEN RAND and TEN RAND set vertically in the margins. Serial EA9842960A in blue.
Back: Farming, rendered in soft greens: a heavy-horned merino ram's head dominating the upper left, sunflowers in bloom beside it, and below a team of oxen drawing a plough past a wind pump, with a flat-topped hill closing the middle distance. A large white 10 stands in the centre of the field. The right-hand panel is left plain for the watermark, with a sunflower rosette carrying the figure 10.
In circulation
Part of the "Big Five" animal series that carried South African currency through the 1990s and 2000s, the ten rand taking the white rhinoceros. This later printing bears Tito Mboweni's signature, so it dates from his governorship onward. A revised version of the same design followed in 2005, and in 2012 the Mandela portrait notes took over entirely.
